Morwell
The station moved the settlement before coal transformed it.
1878Town blocks surveyed · railway settlement
WHAT STARTED IT
The railway placed its station on higher, level ground several kilometres from the old Morwell Bridge coach stop. Businesses clustered around it, serving railway workers, travellers and farm selectors; town blocks were surveyed in 1878.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Timber and dairying supported early growth. Twentieth-century brown-coal power generation transformed Morwell into an industrial town, with extensive postwar housing for workers. The Hazelwood mine fire in 2014 brought severe smoke impacts.
