Mount Gambier
A rural centre beside the caves and volcanic lakes.
1854Private township subdivided
WHAT STARTED IT
Mount Gambier developed to serve settlement in South Australia’s south-east. Water sources and the surrounding pastoral country supported scattered businesses before a formal private township was laid out.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Hastings Cunningham subdivided land as Gambierton in 1854. The settlement grew into a regional commercial centre, later supported by agricultural and industrial activity. A town council was formed in 1876, and city status followed in 1954.

WHAT IT DOES NOW
A Limestone Coast regional centre with services, timber-related industry and tourism. Its volcanic lakes and caves give it a physical identity distinct from the farms and businesses that sustained its growth.
