Mount Isa
A mining city built beside an enormous orebody.
1923Mineral discovery begins the town’s growth
WHAT STARTED IT
Mount Isa grew after John Campbell Miles identified rich mineral deposits in 1923. Mining and processing required a substantial workforce, creating a town beside the orebody rather than a distant service settlement.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Lead, zinc, silver and later large-scale copper production supported the city. Mine infrastructure, housing and services grew together, binding the urban economy closely to the operations. Underground copper mining ended in July 2025 after decades of production.

WHAT IT DOES NOW
A mining and regional service city facing another industrial transition. Zinc, lead and silver operations continue, alongside services for north-west Queensland.
