Mudgee
A pastoral town that supplied surrounding goldfields.
1838Village proclaimed
WHAT STARTED IT
Mudgee grew out of grazing settlement in the Cudgegong valley. Proclaiming a village created a commercial centre for scattered properties, with stores, accommodation and public services.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The village was proclaimed in January 1838 and allotments offered later that year. Gold discoveries around Hargraves, Hill End and Gulgong subsequently brought customers and freight through Mudgee. Wool and farming helped sustain the town as goldfield demand changed.
