The bridge created the town and the railway secured it.

WHAT STARTED IT
Murray Bridge arose around South Australia’s first substantial road crossing of the Murray, completed in 1879. The bridge concentrated travellers and trade at a point previously known through surrounding pastoral properties.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The township, initially called Mobilong, was laid out in 1883. The Adelaide–Melbourne railway crossing in 1886 made it a crucial interstate link. A separate rail bridge opened in 1924 and Swanport Bridge diverted highway traffic in 1979.
