Muswellbrook
Wheat and wool built the town before coal dominated the horizon.
1833Town gazetted · Hunter farming centre
WHAT STARTED IT
Muswellbrook was surveyed and gazetted at the junction of Muscle Creek and the Hunter River to serve the upper valley’s pastoral estates. Wheat, wool, courts and government services sustained the early town.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The railway reached Muswellbrook in 1869 and briefly made it a northern railhead. Coal mining began in the 1890s, while closer settlement after the First World War encouraged dairying. Later open-cut mines and power generation transformed the district economy.
