Nambour
A sugar and railway town behind the beaches.

WHAT STARTED IT
Nambour developed from the Petrie’s Creek settlement as farming and transport came together. The North Coast railway gave growers access to markets and encouraged shops, hotels and a more concentrated town.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
When the railway opened in 1891, the settlement took the name Nambour. The Moreton Central Sugar Mill company formed in 1894, and cane transport became woven into the streets. Sugar processing and rural services shaped the town before the Sunshine Coast’s coastal tourism boom.

WHAT IT DOES NOW
An inland Sunshine Coast service centre with a strong local heritage identity. Surviving cane-tramway features record an agricultural economy that once ran directly through the town.
