WHAT STARTED IT
Naracoorte developed as a service centre in the south-east’s pastoral country. Reliable rainfall and underground water helped make the wider district useful for agriculture, while inns and businesses served travellers and local properties.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The settlement grew through the activities of George Ormerod and William Macintosh. Its early history included the private Kincraig township alongside a government settlement. Local streets and buildings retain traces of these overlapping beginnings.
