1860First town land sales · crossing settlement
WHAT STARTED IT
Narrabri grew where routes through the pastoral country converged near the Namoi River and Narrabri Creek. An inn and smithy served travellers; a town reserve and survey formalised the crossing settlement before land sales in 1860.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The railway reached Narrabri West in 1882. Cotton expanded the district’s agricultural economy in the twentieth century, alongside grain and grazing. Floods repeatedly tested a town built beside intersecting waterways.
