Narrogin
Water for trains gave the settlement a start.
1889Town surveyed · railway water stop
WHAT STARTED IT
Narrogin developed around the Great Southern railway and its need for a water supply near Narrogin Pool. Survey in 1889 created a settlement serving the line before surrounding wheatbelt farms made it a larger commercial centre.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The town was gazetted in 1897. Branch railways opened during the early twentieth century, turning Narrogin into an important junction and railway employment centre. Road transport later reduced that role.
