TASPlanned settlement
New Norfolk
A new home for families moved from Norfolk Island.
1807Relocation begins · Norfolk Island settlers
WHAT STARTED IT
New Norfolk grew from the relocation of settlers from Norfolk Island in 1807–08. Families were allocated land in the Derwent Valley, giving the farming settlement its enduring name despite the official Elizabeth Town name introduced in 1811.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Streets were surveyed in 1812. Institutional employment and hop growing became important in the valley; the Boyer newsprint mill began operating nearby in 1941, adding a major industrial neighbour.
