Newnes
A shale-oil town hidden below sandstone cliffs.
1906Industrial township established
WHAT STARTED IT
Newnes was established to mine and process oil shale in the Wolgan Valley. An ambitious industrial complex needed workers, housing and a transport link through exceptionally difficult country.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The township and works developed in 1906. The Wolgan Valley Railway linked them to the main western line, using tunnels and steep grades. High operating costs and cheaper crude oil undermined the enterprise; the works closed in 1932.
TURNING POINTS
1906The township and shale-oil complex are established.
1932The works close.
WHAT IT DOES NOW
An abandoned industrial settlement visited for its ruins and valley setting. Coke ovens, brick kilns and paraffin sheds survive, while part of the railway route is now associated with the Glow Worm Tunnel.
