A gum forest east of the Park Lands that became part of the colony’s first suburban municipality.

WHAT STARTED IT
Norwood was cut from heavily timbered land just east of the Adelaide Park Lands, close enough for working people to reach the city on foot. Allotments sold in 1848 were advertised as half a mile from the Park Lands, with good water at about 24 feet.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
In 1853 the villages of Kensington, Norwood and Marryatville received a charter as the Corporation of Kensington and Norwood, the first municipality outside the City of Adelaide. The district stayed mainly residential, with a few brickmakers, breweries and vineyards, and by about 1909 electric trams ran along The Parade.
