Nundah
A failed mission that became a farming village on the Sandgate road.
1838Zion Hill mission founded
WHAT STARTED IT
German missionaries founded the Zion Hill mission near Kedron Brook in 1838, and the area became known as German Station. When the mission was given up, its land was surveyed for sale in 1848 and some missionary families stayed on to farm beside the main road north to Sandgate.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
German Station became an early centre of commercial pineapple growing, and coach traffic on Sandgate Road supported a hotel and village. The Sandgate railway opened in 1882 with the station renamed Nundah, a name the district soon adopted; Nundah was the seat of Toombul Shire until 1925.
