WHAT STARTED IT
Perth was chosen as the administrative capital of the Swan River Colony. James Stirling separated the capital from the commercial port at Fremantle, placing government inland along the Swan River.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The colony began in 1829 with free settlers and ambitious land grants, but difficult conditions limited early growth. Convict labour was introduced later, and gold discoveries transformed the colony’s economy towards the end of the nineteenth century.
