Pinjarra
A river crossing became the centre of a grazing district.
1836Military post established · Murray River settlement
WHAT STARTED IT
Pinjarra was laid out beside the Murray River after a military post was established in 1836. Fertile loam and reliable grazing made it the economic and social centre of the district’s early farm settlement.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Road connection to Bunbury followed by 1838. The town continued as a service centre for dairying and mixed farming, while the opening of a nearby alumina refinery in 1974 added a major industrial employer.
