Point Clare
An Irish settler’s farm on the shore became a railway suburb.
1830Peter Fagan takes up a land grant
WHAT STARTED IT
Point Clare lies on the western shore of Brisbane Water, about 4 km south-west of Gosford. Peter Fagan took up a 40-hectare grant here in 1830, and the name is thought to recall his native County Clare.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The Fagan family farmed, grew some of the district’s first oranges and ran a timber business. The railway station opened in 1891, and a jetty on the foreshore served the steamers of Brisbane Water.
