Port Augusta
The shipping point nearest the inland pastoral country.
1852Port selected and named
WHAT STARTED IT
Port Augusta was established near the head of Spencer Gulf to serve pastoral expansion through the Flinders Ranges and inland South Australia. A port here shortened the land journey for wool, supplies and other freight.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The port was selected and named in 1852, with a town plan following in 1854. Railways later strengthened its role as a junction between the inland, the west and the southern ports. The settlement’s function gradually shifted from coastal shipping towards transport and regional services. Northern Power Station closed in 2016, marking a decisive break from the city’s long coal-and-power era.

WHAT IT DOES NOW
A regional service and transport centre at the meeting of important road and rail routes. Its location remains valuable even though the original shipping economy has changed.
