Port Lincoln
A magnificent harbour lacked water for a capital but excelled as a port.
1839Town surveyed · Eyre Peninsula port
WHAT STARTED IT
Port Lincoln was surveyed on Boston Bay in 1839 after consideration—and rejection—as South Australia’s capital site. Its deep harbour instead gave Eyre Peninsula settlers a shipping and service centre.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Jetties supported coastal trade from the 1850s. Railways built across the peninsula between 1907 and 1926 channelled wheat through the port; bulk grain silos followed in 1959. Fishing and aquaculture later broadened the maritime economy.
