Port Pirie
A rural port transformed by Broken Hill ore.
1845Early use as a port
WHAT STARTED IT
Port Pirie first developed as a shipping outlet for the surrounding country. Its coastal location became much more valuable when rail transport connected it with the mineral wealth of Broken Hill.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The port was in use by 1845. Rail links and smelting gave the settlement a major industrial role in the late nineteenth century. A lead-smelting plant was established in 1889, making ore processing central to the city’s identity.
TURNING POINTS
1845Port activity begins.
1889Lead smelting becomes a major local industry.
2025A $23 million recycling facility becomes fully operational in July to reduce lead-in-air concentrations.
WHAT IT DOES NOW
A regional port and industrial city whose economy remains strongly associated with smelting and services. Its waterfront and industrial landscape reveal a much larger role than the original rural shipping point.
