WHAT STARTED IT
Inns and stores appeared where the Great North Road crossed the pastoral Upper Hunter. The settlement served large sheep and cattle properties and travellers moving north through the ranges.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
A roadside settlement formed beside the St Aubins Arms in 1836 and was gazetted as Scone in 1837. The railway arrived in 1871. Horse studs and racing later became a defining district industry alongside grazing.
