WHAT STARTED IT
Travellers favoured Seymour’s Goulburn River crossing over the earlier route through Mitchellstown: it was easier to ford and shortened the journey. A punt operating from 1839 helped anchor a permanent settlement.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The railway arrived in 1872 and drew development away from the flood-prone riverside towards the station. Military camps added another role, especially with the establishment of nearby Puckapunyal in 1939.
