Taree
The railway helped a private river town overtake its rivals.
1854Private town laid out · Manning Valley service centre
WHAT STARTED IT
Taree was laid out as a private town on William Wynter’s grant beside the Manning River. Cedar cutting and surrounding farms supplied its earliest trade, though government preference initially favoured nearby Wingham.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Municipal incorporation came in 1885. The railway’s arrival in 1913 proved decisive, making Taree the valley’s principal commercial centre. Martin Bridge replaced the punt in 1940 and strengthened road connections across the river.
