WHAT STARTED IT
Temora’s sudden growth came from gold. Prospecting intensified in 1879 and a rush brought miners and the businesses needed to feed, house and supply them.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The district was proclaimed a goldfield in June 1880. The mining boom was brief compared with the town’s later agricultural life. Farms and grain growing gave Temora a more enduring role as a service centre after the excitement of the diggings faded.
