Ulverstone
Timber exports came first; rail made the town flourish.
1854Land released · Leven settlement forms
WHAT STARTED IT
Ulverstone formed near the Leven River as timber workers supplied palings to the Victorian goldfields. Land was released in 1854 and a post office opened in 1857, when the small settlement was commonly called Leven.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The name Ulverstone became official in 1861. Growth remained modest until the railway arrived in 1890, connecting farms, mills and the north-west coast. A branch line later carried inland timber to Burnie.
