Walhalla
A gold town tucked into a valley.
1862Gold discovered · town grew from the rush
WHAT STARTED IT
Gold found in Stringers Creek drew prospectors into a steep Gippsland valley. Rich underground reefs sustained a settlement where almost every available flat patch became a house, shop or mine.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Gold sustained the town for decades, but the late-arriving railway did not prevent mining decline and population loss. Visitors, mine tours and the heritage railway now support the much smaller village.
Read the fuller history
For nearly half a century, gold supported a busy mining community. A railway arrived in 1910, just as the mines were approaching the end of their profitable lives. The population then fell dramatically.

WHAT IT DOES NOW
A small heritage village supported by visitors, mine tours and a volunteer-run railway. Its narrow valley still makes the shape of the old mining town easy to read.
