Wallangarra
Different track gauges made a whole town necessary.
1887Border railway station opens
WHAT STARTED IT
Wallangarra existed to handle the railway break of gauge at the NSW–Queensland border. Queensland’s narrow-gauge trains and NSW’s standard-gauge trains could not continue onto each other’s tracks, so passengers and freight had to change.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The station opened in 1887. Its island platform served the two systems on opposite sides, bringing railway jobs and businesses to the border settlement. The coastal uniform-gauge route opened in 1930 and removed its importance as the main Sydney–Brisbane interchange.
TURNING POINTS
1887The station opens as a border interchange.
1930The coastal uniform-gauge route reduces the town’s railway role.
WHAT IT DOES NOW
A small border town with a preserved station and railway heritage. The platform’s two sides still explain the engineering decision that shaped the settlement.
