Warragul
The railway shifted settlement away from the old coach road.

WHAT STARTED IT
Warragul appeared when the Gippsland railway bypassed the earlier Brandy Creek coach settlement. Shops, hotels and trades clustered around the new station, which opened with the town in 1878.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Sawmills used the railway to send West Gippsland timber to Melbourne. As forests were cleared, dairying became the district’s leading pursuit; a butter factory opened in 1888. Road bypass and commuter links later tied the town more closely to metropolitan Melbourne.
