Weipa
A company town for bauxite, distinct from the older mission.
1964–67Modern mining township built
WHAT STARTED IT
The modern Weipa township was built to support bauxite mining. Economic deposits identified in 1955 brought an exploration camp, followed by mining infrastructure and housing managed by Comalco.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The mining town was built between 1964 and 1967. It was called Weipa North, distinguishing it from the older mission community to the south, now Napranum. The company’s responsibility for town management made its civic structure unusual.
