Whyalla
An ore-shipping camp that became a steel city.
1901Hummock Hill work camp begins
WHAT STARTED IT
Whyalla began as Hummock Hill, a BHP settlement built to get iron ore from the Middleback Ranges to the sea. A tramway from Iron Knob and waterfront loading facilities created the need for workers and a town.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The first workers arrived in 1901. BHP’s operations expanded into ironmaking, shipbuilding and steel, and company housing shaped the settlement. The town’s fortunes became closely tied to large industrial employers and the demand for their products.
