1909State Coal Mine opens · purpose-built mining town
WHAT STARTED IT
Victoria opened the State Coal Mine in 1909 to secure black coal for its railways during disruption to supplies from New South Wales. Miners initially lived in tents before a planned town and services took shape.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The mine shaped work, housing and a strong cooperative and union culture. A 1937 explosion killed thirteen miners. Mining ended in 1968 as diesel locomotives reduced the railways’ need for coal.
