Young
A goldfield remembered for cherries and a violent rush.
1860Gold discovered at Lambing Flat
WHAT STARTED IT
Young grew from the gold discoveries at Lambing Flat. Mining drew people to what had been pastoral country, and a commercial settlement rapidly formed to supply the diggings.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The rush began in 1860. In 1861 European miners violently expelled Chinese miners from the field; nearby Currawong became a refuge. The town later developed a more lasting agricultural economy, with fruit growing becoming a prominent part of its identity.
