Zeehan
A silver boom town with buildings larger than its present life.
1882Silver-lead ore discovered
WHAT STARTED IT
Zeehan grew around silver-lead deposits discovered in 1882. The field attracted miners and businesses, but difficult transport initially delayed its development.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The mineral boom eventually produced a substantial commercial town, a school of mines and smelting facilities. When mining declined, its population and business activity contracted. Large surviving buildings reflect the confidence and scale of its boom years.
