When the river was the highway
River ports and their second lives · 5 stops
Explore ports and crossings shaped by inland cargo. New railways and roads changed their purpose; agriculture, regional services and heritage tourism supplied later roles. These are thematic stops, not a continuous river route.
THE STOPS
GoolwaRiver cargo needed a way around the hazardous Murray mouth. The 1854 horse railway to Port Elliot supplied a coastal transfer; the line later reached Victor Harbor.
Victor HarborA coastal outlet took over from the unsafe anchorage at Port Elliot. The railway extension in 1864 connected it to Goolwa’s river trade.
WentworthAt the Darling–Murray junction, river cargo and pastoral trade brought wharves, stores and officials. Road transport later changed that business.
Swan HillA punt crossing attracted inns and stores. Riverboats, farming, irrigation and eventually rail added successive reasons for the town to remain useful.
EchucaRail first helped the port flourish, then competing lines diverted its trade. The wharf and paddle steamers found a later role in tourism.
