Discovery trail
Life after the gold rush
Five different paths beyond the diggings
A shared beginning did not produce a shared future. Compare regional cities, industrial adaptation, preserved streets and a mining village that became a visitor destination. This trail groups related stories; its stops are not a historical travel route.
THE STOPS
BallaratDeep mining extended the boom; public institutions and a broader regional economy helped a gold camp become a lasting city.
BendigoLong-lived underground mining gave the city time to accumulate trades and institutions. Health, education and other services now broaden its role.
CastlemaineWhen easy alluvial gold declined, workshops, industry and services helped the town endure.
MaldonSlower growth preserved much of the old commercial streetscape. Those buildings became part of the town’s later heritage appeal.
WalhallaRail arrived near the end of profitable mining, rather than rescuing it. The population shrank; mine tours and a heritage railway now support the village.
