When the company was the town
One enterprise, very different fortunes
Oil shale, steel, coal and copper created work that shaped entire settlements. Compare an abandoned industrial ambition with towns that adapted to changing employers and markets. These are thematic stops, not a historical travel route.
THE STOPS
NewnesOil-shale mining and processing brought works, workers’ housing and a difficult railway into the Wolgan Valley. The enterprise closed in 1932, leaving ruins where an industrial town had been.
WhyallaBHP’s ore-loading settlement at Hummock Hill expanded into ironmaking, shipbuilding and steel. Company housing and industrial employment helped shape a much larger city.
Leigh CreekA state-backed coal enterprise supported a town built around fuel for South Australia’s power stations. Relocation prolonged that relationship; closure removed much of its economic foundation.
QueenstownMount Lyell’s copper industry made this the district’s industrial centre. Mines, smelting and timber use shaped both the community and its surrounding landscape.
